Well, things may be different here in the US so I don't know how helpful I can be but I imagine it can't be too different. I know most medical schools are competitive and that usually a 3.5 grade point average is usually what it takes to get in. That and the exam you take (here it is called the MCAT)and you have to score well on it.
I'm not sure what your undergraduate is, but most dental and medical schools require that you have to have a year or two of the hard sciences before you enter and you I'm sure, already have this. Both ventures are expensive and require more than 4 yrs to obtain a license (not sure about dental school but medical is 4yrs plus 2yr residency to just be a general practioner). Any surgeon would require above and beyond this, years. I have friend that is a Cardiovascular surgeon and it took 4yrs of medical school, almost 4 more years and residency to be a practicing surgeon. He took out loans and has already repaid them in 3yrs.
If this is your goal to become a dental surgeon, I certainly would let the expenses keep you from it. You'll earn enough to pay off the loans. Follow your dream or you could regret it the rest of your life.

Dentists do teeth.
:D
This is the best I can do, I'm the worst medical person you could even imagine.

Well done and good for you. I am in no way qualified to direct you in this matter.
I once read that being a dentist has a very high stress and suicide rate because of the fact that everyone DOESN'T actually want to see the dentist, and they do pick up and carry a lot of this angst, much as an auditor, lawyer or police officer does. There are probably a lot more directions that you could take a medical degree as well. If you aren't sure which direction that you want to head into, perhaps becoming a doctor would have a few more options. Just an observation.
Is there some way that you could be a casual observer in both fields? Perhaps volunteer inside both for a week or two over the summer? Best of luck in your endeavors!
