I'm a writer and I want to write a book about lesbians, but I'm not one, so I need a little help. What are they like? What do they do? Are they anything like we see in movies? Help, please.

Ok im bi I have been with females! My question is why you want to write about something that is real if you know nothing about it? You should hang out with a few to understand their life style. Like one person said go to a gay bar and meet a few. Their relationships are the same as straight relationships but believe me criticism is a big issue! I have lots of gay and lesbian friends they are great! They love live and do the same as if they were straigt but its harder to be gay. Get to become friends with some and you'll see.

Why would anyone want to read a book about lesbians by an author that has no concept of what they are like? I think you need to reverse the roles here- YOU read about lesbians by writers that are knowledgable and can educate you about them.

This is like asking "what is France like?"

It's too big an issue to describe over the internet.

Go and find and LGBT group, talk to people, spend time with some actual real lesbians. Read some lesbian fiction, get involved with some forums and websites online.

If you want to be a writer then research is going to be a big part of your life so learn how to do it. Asking on a problem page is probably not the best first port of call.

It might take you a year of research and rewrites to get it right, but it'll be worth it in the end. This is why writers get such large advances, because it takes a long time to do the research.

Good Luck!! xx

Go to a gay club and make some friends, the strength of the gay scene is the best place to start.

A reader, anonymous, writes (24 April 2009):

What is your motivation to write a book about lesbians when you do not know anything about it and that you think it is anything like in the movies?

Are you writing fiction or are you writing facts?

Would you not reconsider your motivation and write about something that you are actually familiar with, than with something you only have a mythical idea of?

Regardless, it would be prudent to spend time in the LBGT community and get to know people. The best research comes when you get first hand witness and experience to it. This sort of thing also takes time - a lot of it. Writing about a particular lifestyle, a good book would dictate that you become intimate with the subject. A book like this in today's day and age will invite many critics for and against this sort of lifestyle. Therefore, you have to be as objective in your writing as possible. If you are biased, then it is no different than writing fiction.
